Keep it classic
Among the weird and wonderful accessories that emerged at the shows, there were an array of classic bag shapes to get excited about. Prada’s Re-Edition 1995 tote bag – a modern update of a ’90s-era style, available in glossy black or postbox-red – is one such piece. “Customers are seeking longevity, and are investing in classic, timeless pieces,” says Gramston, who’s noticed growing demand for investment products at Browns.
Net-a-porter.com customers are thinking ahead. Page reports that shoppers are after pieces with timeless appeal that “will retain value in years to come and become eligible for resale”. “Customers are certainly spending more on investment pieces across all categories – they’re shopping for quality, higher price point items that they can wear and cherish, now and forever,” she adds.
Level up
“The sky-high platform was a spring standout,” notes De Sole. The best stompers include Valentino Garavani’s Tan-Gos, Saint Laurent’s Paloma Picasso-inspired patent Kika heels, Amina Muaddi’s silky towering Yigit shoes and Versace’s strappy wedges. (Ingram reveals that Team Threads is “obsessed” with the latter.)
Proof that platforms are here to stay? Net-a-porter.com has bought into over 50 platform styles across 18 brands, including celebrity-approved D’Accori. “We saw the return of head-turning platforms, bringing a whole new level of drama,” says Page.
Craft story
Designers got crafty for spring/summer 2022, delivering accessories that are well-suited to both beaches and city parks. “Crochet, quilting, raffia and fringe details on bags or even shoes really define the essence of summer accessories,” muses Hsu.
Craftsmanship has always been a key focus at Matchesfashion.com. “Our customer really connects with artisanal design,” says Smart. “It was great to see this come through on the runways.”
Prada’s bestselling raffia tote bags are back for another season, arriving in delectable pastel shades – the lilac colourway is on Ingram’s wish list. Gabriela Hearst, meanwhile, unveiled a line-up of woven accessories both under her eponymous line and at Chloé, which Page assures will “make you dream of your next seaside getaway”. Page and Gramston agree that JW Anderson’s knitted tote, available in rainbow stripes and his juicy strawberry motif, will be another seasonal hit.
Sandals – with a twist
Sandals were given a funky update this season. Chunky rubber sandals cropped up across the board – they’re the “cool-girl, go-to footwear pick,” according to Gramston – courtesy of Miu Miu, Bottega Veneta, Prada and Gucci.
Lace-up sandals are back, says De Sole, who shouts out Valentino Garavani’s Rockstud sandals and The Row’s horn-ring flats as must-haves.
Team Vogue was also delighted to learn of Manolo Blahnik’s collaboration with Birkenstock, which – as expected – was a sell-out success. There are a few remaining styles available at retailers and resale sites like Vestiaire Collective. Be quick!
